Ssubi's Mission

The Ssubi Foundation is a registered Canadian charity that seeks to provide poverty relief to underprivileged Ugandan children and their families through educational initiatives and the provision of micro-financing. Specifically, this includes:

  • providing financial aid and school supplies (including school fees, uniforms, scholastic materials, medical costs, meals and transportation);
  • supporting the existing Ugandan school system by:
    • building new school blocks or renovating existing schools,
    • providing scholastic materials, and
    • providing training and/or competitive salaries to teachers; and,
  • establishing micro-financing opportunities to help Ugandan families start small businesses.

Ssubi's History

In 2006, Ellie Siebens and Philip Ndugga decided to help a Ugandan woman, Tamali Abalo, receive medical treatment for a facial cancerous tumor. They had seen her picture in a Ugandan newspaper with requests for assistance. At the time Tamali was living in an Internally Displaced Peoples (IDP) camp in Gulu, northern Uganda and had not received any medical treatment for her condition since it began approximately 20 years ago. Philip contacted people within the Ugandan medical community and together, Ellie and Philip began to send money to start medical treatments for Tamali which consisted of radiation therapy and pain medication.

In the summer of 2006, Philip traveled to Uganda to meet Tamali to determine what more could be done for her. After meeting Tamali, Philip and Ellie decided to provide her a home, along with a monthly allowance that would continue to cover her medical costs. Currently, The Ssubi Foundation is assisting Tamali to build a hut on her traditional land where she grew up. With peace in the region for the last year, Tamali like many others has a desire to return to the land she left 20 years ago at the start of the civil war in Northern Uganda.

While in Uganda, Philip discovered many more opportunities to help other people living in IDP camps; especially school-aged children and their respective families. And it is from this humble beginning that the concept of The Ssubi Foundation – building hope – was formed.

Today, The Ssubi Foundation operates throughout Uganda in a non-religious and non-partisan manner. The Ssubi Foundation is made up of four Canadian-based directors and an Operations Manager who is located in Kampala, Uganda (see Directors and Staff). Together, they work to provide educational support to school-aged Ugandan children, micro-financing opportunities to their respective families, and the construction of new schools and/or the addition of cell blocks to existing schools located throughout Uganda.

Our Involvement

For the past two years, we've helped put together Ssubi's video presentations, showcasing their work in Uganda. In the near future, we hope to join Ssubi's team of volunteers in Uganda, helping build another school for Ugandan children.
